FARMERS MARKET, IN-CLASS EDUCATION, AND SCHOOL GARDEN

The innovative pilot project was on for a total of four weeks in the fall of 2009 at the University Heights Public School when local produce was in abundance. The focus was on food literacy and food education. Growing Chefs! provided in-class education, the London Community Resource Centre planned and planted a beautiful garden and the Covent Garden Farmers Market had 12 farm vendors come to the school Wednesday’s ready to provide the convenience to parents picking up their children from school with access to farm fresh produce. The garden provided educational opportunities for pupils to see food growing and make the connection of where their food comes from.  Pupils at the school spent an hour on Wednesday’s in the Growing Chefs! in-class program, then were given a voucher and sent out to the market.

The pilot project was a partnership between the Covent Garden Market, the London Community Resource Centre, Growing Chefs! and University Heights Public School.

The project was made possibly through funding from the TD Friends of the Environment, donations from Turf Pro Landscaping and Dolway Organic Garden.
