Early Harvest Plants

May is one of my favourite months of the year! Not only am I excited for warmer weather, more sunshine and the soon arrival of summer. I most look forward to the early harvest. Late spring and early summer provide the first taste of the season. I especially love the fresh asparagus, strawberries, rhubarb and cucumber available.

One of my personal food values is to cook with what is in season. I like how Foodland Ontario provides a comprehensive list of what is in season each month. For the month of May, the following are in season either from the garden or greenhouse (as marked with a *):

  • Rhubarb
  • Strawberries
  • Asparagus
  • Carrots
  • Cucumber
  • Lettuce*
  • Mushrooms
  • Onions
  • Peppers*
  • Potatoes
  • Radishes
  • Rutabaga
  • Spinach
  • Sprouts
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Tomatoes*

At this time of year, I particularly enjoy making strawberry rhubarb pie, grilled or roasted asparagus, any type of salad (spring bounty chopped salad) and of course any recipe involving sweet potatoes is must! I can’t wait to try these Cajun sweet potato fingers with chili mayonnaise.

Be sure to check out for more recipes and information!

What dishes do you enjoy making using the early harvest? We’d love to know! Please leave us a comment below.
